After being taught how to crimp pasties by his mum, Giles Williams built a factory, opened a shop and started selling pasties to the locals in 1999. Since then our family has grown to a team of 40 people, working across five stores and seven delivery vans. Our heritage lies in hard-working people from the local community who make, bake, deliver Cornwall’s favourite meal for you to enjoy. Here’s some more about the people behind the pasties.
Giles Williams — former farmer Giles (owner)
Giles doesn’t like to talk about himself much — he’s a humble, proud Cornishman, born and bred on a farm in Trescowe, near Praa Sands; a farmer’s son and former mechanic.
He will tell you that it’s people, not bosses, that make a business, but, what he won’t tell you is that he still works in the prep room alongside his staff from 5.30am three days a week.
Marilyn Venn — “Everyone needs a Marilyn” (admin)
Marilyn has been part of our team since 2010. Her polite job description is ‘Head of Finance and Admin,’ but that doesn’t quite cover it.
"Everyone needs a Marilyn," says Giles. "She holds the reins, keeps the place running and gets involved with most things in the office (whether we want it or not)." Actually, he says, Marilyn is "tighter with my money than I am".
Robert Williams — fundamental cog
Giles’ brother keeps a low profile too, but he’s fundamental to the whole operation. Since 2003, he’s worked tirelessly across every aspect of the prep room to earn respect from the other members of the Cornish Oven family.
Rob is crucial to the day-to-day running of the shops and vans. Just like his brother, most mornings you’ll find him working alongside the team, preparing the fresh-filled products for the vans.
Lou Parr — heart and voice
You’ll probably come into contact with Lou more times than you realise. You may see her driving a van or manning the till in-store, or you may chat to her through social media, as the voice of the Cornish Oven.
Lou also deals with suppliers and (literally) rolls up her sleeves in the prep room. Starting in 2005, Lou truly is the heart of the operation.
Some of our staff have been with us for more than a decade. They are all drawn into the bosom of the Cornish Oven family from the local community. Most have moved around a bit, from the vans to the stores, and back again, so they know what makes our business great — you.
Our staff are the face of the company. We have a wonderful team who don’t just sell pasties, they ask about your day, your holiday, and, in some cases, they’ll have your coffee ready as you walk through the door…just the way you like it.
Behind the scenes
More than 20 local people make and bake your pasties, sausage rolls and sandwiches in our Pool HQ. They get cracking before dawn (5.30am), filling, crimping and baking the food which fuels your working day.
This is where the magic happens — our secret ingredient is not the contents of our pasties but the people that make them.
